Winter Isolation

Heavy grey clouds enshroud Moscow. Darkness seems to get only slightly lighter at noon and then it drifts back to the usual black of the night. All my ideas, inspiration, aims are dissolved and swallowed into the obscurity of winter gloom. My only desire is to stay in bed and wake up when it’s warm again. ⠀ ⠀ I find my consolation in books and today I read that in Japanese they have a special word for this type of mood - fuyugomori [冬篭り] winter confinement, winter isolation, wintering; staying indoors during winter. In Japanese literature it also implies a retreat from vain affairs, when you can slowly indulge in reading, writing and contemplation. Here is what great haiku poets wrote on the subject: ⠀ ⠀ Winter solitude — In a world of one color the sound of wind. ⠀ Basho ⠀ ⠀ No good deeds But also no sins… Winter isolation. ⠀ Kobayashi Issa ⠀ ⠀

One more day Of winter confinement… Makes two. ⠀ Kobayashi Issa ⠀ ⠀

Anyway celebrate I will This winter hibernation With apricot blossoms in my heart. ⠀ Tr. Takafumi Saito ⠀ ⠀ Winter hibernation Against this pillar I'll snuggle once again. ⠀ Tr. Saito ⠀ ⠀

Locked in for the winter - Again I'll be nestling close To this post ⠀ Tr. Ueda
